  • New EdSource Report: Raising African American Student Achievement: California Goals, Local Outcomes

The report finds that the achievement of the state's nearly half-million African American students varies widely across districts and schools and that although African American student achievement in the state is improving, California still has much to do.

This report is accompanied by a 2-page Executive Summary as well as special web resources, including a list of the elementary, middle, and high schools that have received substantially above-average African American Growth API scores for 2007, plus interviews with principals from 10 of these schools.

  • New Research Summary: California's Continuation Schools

Each year, more than 10% of California's public high school students attend some kind of "alternative" program, most notably continuation, community, and community day schools. This free 8-page brief summarizes an initial study on continuation high schools by the California Alternative Education Research Project.

  • New From EdSource -- California's Charter Schools: 2008 Performance Update

Our fourth annual analysis of charter school performance compares student achievement as measured by state tests for charter elementary, middle, and high schools with their non-charter counterparts. It also compares charters operated by charter management organizations with those that are not. Along with vital statistics on the state's charter schools, this report focuses in on three large unified school districts with substantial numbers of charter schools. And it analyzes the effects of a new state law that sets benchmarks for charter renewal.

You can purchase the full report online.
