Written for the Lumina Foundation, this is a case study of the Hiram Johnson High School College Access project and includes some recommendations for action.

 
The Youth Development Guide (PDF):
Created by the Community Network for Youth Development (CNYD), with support from the California After-School Partnership.  Although it was written for a school-based after school audience (practitioners, site coordinators, sponsors and administrators), the principles, practices and examples in the Guide are relevant to any youth-serving program or organization.

 
Introduction to Youth Development Training:  Staff Facilitator’s Guide (PDF):
This Facilitator’s Guide, created by the Community Network for Youth Development (CNYD), is designed to enable trainers and managers who work with afterschool programs and/or other youth-serving organizations to introduce youth development principles and practices to staff using CNYD’s Youth Development Guide.

 
Making It Happen: Relationship Building Staff Training Module (PDF):
This set of readings, assessments and staff development exercises, created by the Community Network for Youth Development, is an in-depth exploration of relationship building between youth and adults and among young people.  Specifically, these materials examine the importance of relationship building; key practices that support relationship building, the unique role of youth workers in young people’s lives, and how to foster meaningful relationships between youth.

 
Making It Happen: Skill Building Staff Training Module (PDF):
This set of readings, assessments and staff development exercises created by the Community Network for Youth Development is an in-depth exploration of how to create meaningful youth programs that effectively build young people's skills.  Specifically, these materials introduce effective and proven strategies for facilitating three dimensions of skill building—creating challenging and interesting activities that provide opportunities for growth and progress.

This set of readings, assessments and staff development exercises created by the Community Network for Youth Development is an in-depth exploration of how to design and run youth programs that effectively and meaning fully engage young people.  Specifically, the materials examine how to provide young people with rich opportunities for input and decision-making and how to design programs that create a sense of ownership and belonging.  The Guide articulates the roles adult allies play in supporting youth participation, and identifies strategies for supporting the development of leadership skills in youth.
